You’re sitting in your living room enjoying a beautiful California evening when you notice a spider making itself at home in the corner. Or maybe you’re making dinner and notice a roach crawling across your counter. But these aren’t the only household pests you can encounter in Fresno, CA.

Here are some of the most common household pests found in Fresno and northern California homes.

Ants

There are approximately 270 species of ants in California alone. So it’s no surprise these are at the top of our list of the most common household pests. Some ants that you might find in your home include:

While it’s true some ants are attracted to our sugar containers, others may be using the wood in your home to nest. This can cause serious damage to your home. If you notice any ants nesting in your home, you may need to schedule an appointment to get your home treated immediately.

Termites

Termites are pests that aren’t often seen but can have a huge impact on your home. Termites eat wood and can live inside the walls of your home. There are a few things that may indicate you have a termite problem. They include:

  • Pinpoint holes in your drywall
  • Maze-like patterns in furniture, floors, and walls
  • Excessively squeaky floorboards
  • Stuck windows or doors
  • Mud tubes on your foundation

When dealing with these pests, you’ll need professional help getting rid of them. Your home will need to be treated to stop the infestation and prevent further damage from happening.

Cockroaches

There are two main kinds of cockroaches often found in northern California homes German cockroaches and Turkistan cockroaches. These are resourceful little pests that can come into your home in a number of ways. They can hide in nearly every crack and crevice and reproduce at alarming rates.

If you notice any signs of cockroaches, it’s important to act quickly to get rid of them. Be sure to keep all foods put away, immediately clean any surfaces you use to prepare food, and don’t let dishes sit in the sink. Also try caulking any cracks you notice by window seals, baseboards, doors, and cabinets to limit the places they can hide.

Rodents

The most common rodents found in Northern California are Roof Rats and Field Mice. These unwelcomed guests take up residence in our homes and can carry numerous diseases. When dealing with this household pest, it’s best to set out traps or poisons as soon as you notice signs.

You can also fill in any holes you notice to help prevent them from hiding in your walls. Be sure to keep your food stored away in containers the rodents can’t eat through.

Bedbugs

Bedbugs are common household pests that make their home where we sleep. Unlike cockroaches, they don’t care if a home is clean or dirty; they will still invade. They hide in the seams of your mattress, crevices in your bed frame, or even cracks in floorboards or window seals near your bed.

It can be hard to spot signs of bedbugs since they are only active when you go to sleep. This makes it easier for them to have access to their food source, your blood, without the danger of being killed. If you think you have bedbugs look for these signs:

  • Small circular bites down your arms or legs
  • Black specs on your mattress or sheets
  • Shed skins
  • Musty odor

If you find evidence of these pests, be sure to give us a call and we’ll help you get rid of them quickly!

Fleas

Fleas are a pest that can be a nuisance, especially if you have furry friends in your home. They attach themselves to your pet and can live on them for up to 12 months if not removed. They also can reproduce at extreme rates, making an infestation hard to control very quickly.

Fleas can lay eggs in carpeting or in fabrics, so if you notice small bites on your feet or ankles be sure to wash them at very high temperatures. Treating your yard in early spring can help prevent you or your pet from bringing them inside.

Wasps

Here in Fresno and northern California, there are many types of wasps, but we often see Yellow Jackets and Paper Wasps around our homes. Wasps are territorial household pests and will sting more than once when they feel threatened. This can be painful and a potentially dangerous problem if you’re allergic to wasp stings.

When trying to remove a nest, be sure to wear gloves, avoid strong scents, and wait until night to avoid being stung. If you plan on spraying the nest down, this can cause the wasps to swarm; get as far away from the nest as possible before spraying.

Spiders

There are many different species of spiders found in Fresno and California, but some of the most common include:

  • Black widows
  • Wolf Spiders
  • House Spiders
  • Brown recluse

These are normally fairly harmless if left alone, but can be dangerous if they do bite. Removing their webs can be an effective way of removing them from the home, but if there are numerous spiders you may be dealing with an infestation. You can spray pesticides to help control the numbers, but you may require professional help to get rid of them completely.

More Common Household Pests

Some more household pests you may notice include:

Most pests listed here aren’t much of a threat but can be a nuisance if not dealt with. Some of these, like mosquitos and stink bugs, can be seasonal issues and can be controlled with preventative measures.
